Boatlift at Denton
Denton Wharf, Gravesend, provides us with a purpose-built facility to undertake a wide range of marine operations, both in support of the PLA’s own requirements and third-parties.
The facility is the Marine Services’ operational base for the PLA’s fleet of 40 vessels and provides storage and maintenance areas for buoys, lights, mooring and counter-pollution equipment. It is also the centre for the PLA’s diving and salvage services and was used as the reception area for the sections of the Elizabethan-era wreck successfully recovered from the estuary by the PLA in 2004.
Fully equipped with a fixed 40-tonne heavy-lift crane and a 50-tonne mobile crane, the jetty also has a dockway that is independently served by a 70-tonne capacity boat-lift where craft can be lifted out of the water and taken ashore for maintenance on adjacent level ground. With the depletion of boatyard facilities on the Thames, the boat-lift at Denton Wharf enables the PLA to accommodate third-party business on top of its normal duties in maintaining the PLA fleet and other equipment associated with its responsibilities for the tidal Thames.
