The Port of London Authority (PLA) is responsible for 95 miles of the tidal Thames from Teddington Lock to the North Sea. The river is home to the largest commercial port in the south of England, as well as being the busiest inland waterway for passengers and freight in the UK and a centre for sport and recreation. The PLA is responsible for safety of navigation, promoting use of the river and sustaining its unique maritime environment. Playing a pivotal role in the Thames, London and beyond, the PLA reinvests its financial surpluses in the organisation’s operational assets and improving the river for future generations.
The PLA is seeking an exceptional and experienced Chairman to succeed the incumbent, who is to step down in December 2015 after six years in the role. Key tasks will include: ensuring that the right commercial and strategic goals are set, followed and delivered upon; mentoring and developing the CEO and his management team; ensuring that risks are managed appropriately; optimising a relatively new board comprised of experienced and strong professionals; and representing the PLA to a wide range of stakeholders. Developing a forward-looking emphasis on strategic direction, customers, commercial performance and technical excellence are key objectives.
In addition to significant and successful chairman experience, candidates will have an outstanding track record of leadership in a commercial or public organisation. They will be politically astute and have exceptional listening, communication and influencing skills. They will also require knowledge of, or the ability to understand, the strong conservancy role which PLA has as custodian of this great national asset.
A time commitment of at least one day a week is expected and the remuneration on offer reflects this. This appointment is subject to Department for Transport approval.
