Deputy Harbour Master (Lower)


Salary: £51,846 per annum plus benefits

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames. The Lower District encompasses the commercial heart of the Port of London, covering the area from Dagenham to the Outer Estuary. As part of our duties under the Port Marine Safety Code, we manage and maintain the port’s navigational safety management system

The successful applicant will support the Harbour Master in directing and co-coordinating the provision of a safe and cost effective service in the Lower District, through incident and accident investigation, customer and practitioner liaison, Pilot and Pilot Exemption Certificate examinations and contingency management. The post holder will also act as Deputy Port Security Officer, and nominated Explosives Officer.

Applicants should hold either STCW 95 II/2 (Masters unlimited) certificate of competency (or equivalent) or a lesser STCW qualification, but with suitable experience; combined with relevant port management experience. Applicants will need to demonstrate that they be able to lead, motivate and manage effectively, with proven and effective interpersonal skills. Excellent communications skills in all media and an ability to work effectively under pressure are essential.

The post is based at the PLA headquarters in Gravesend and the job holder will be required to work out of hours on occasion. In return we offer a highly competitive salary plus benefits package, which includes a contributory pension scheme, private health insurance and car allowance.
