Salary: £51,846 per annum plus benefits

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames from the outer estuary to Teddington. As part of our duties under the Port Marine Safety Code, we manage and maintain the port’s navigational safety management system.

Reporting to the Harbour Master (Upper), this post supports the Harbour Master in directing and co-coordinating the provision of a safe and cost effective service in the Upper District. You will manage, on a day-to-day basis, operations in the Upper District and will be the main point of contact for passage planning and risk assessment. You will be primarily responsible for the investigation of navigational and pollution incidents within the District and for obtaining evidence to develop new safety initiatives as well as taking enforcement action, which may include prosecutions. You will also examine and assess candidates for Local Knowledge as well as assessing the competence of PLA River Pilots and PEC candidates to determine allocation of authorisations or certificates.

Applicants should ideally hold a STCW II/2 (Masters Unlimited) Certificate of Competency or a lesser STCW certificate, and have at least 5 years relevant management experience in the marine and ports industry, including in particular, navigational safety management and risk assessment. You must be able to lead, motivate and manage effectively and have proven and effective interpersonal skills. Good writing skills and an ability to work effectively under pressure are essential.
