About Us

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames from the outer estuary to Teddington. As part of our duties under the Port Marine Safety Code, we manage and maintain the port’s navigational safety management system.

The Role

As part of the Chief Harbour Master’s team, reporting to the Marine Pilotage Manager, this post will play a key role in the delivery of a safe, efficient and economic Pilotage service. You will use knowledge and experience to effectively manage a unionised workforce of approximately 90 pilots as well as support staff to ensure a high level of safety is maintained. You will be required to contribute to and implement strategies to achieve future economies and greater efficiencies in the delivery of Pilotage and working closely with customers to ensure a high level of customer service is maintained. You will support the Marine Pilotage Manager in all Pilotage matters including policy in conformance with the pilotage legislation.

The Person

Applicants should have relevant management experience, ideally gained in a Port or Marine environment. Experience in managing in a unionised workforce is essential. You must be able to lead, enthuse and influence others using a range of communication techniques to best effect. You will be innovative and creative in your approach, whilst remaining confident and professional. Personal resilience and the ability to work effectively under pressure are essential.
