Environmental Management System
The Port of London Authority places importance on complying with its responsibilities to the natural, human and built environment, and has procedures and measures in place to minimise environmental impacts arising from its activities. These procedures and processes have been drawn together to create a formal Environmental Management System (EMS) based on the principles and requirements of ISO 14001:2004 - the International Standard for Environmental Management Systems.
In March 2006 the PLA received notification that the EMS met the requirements of the standard and was formally recommended for certification by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance (LRQA). This recommendation was later endorsed by LRQA and the PLA’s certificate was presented by the LRQA UK General Manager, Mike James, during an informal ceremony at London River House on 24th April 2006.
The certification is subject to biannual audits by LRQA to ensure compliance and therefore demonstrating to all stakeholders that the PLA operates to an internationally recognised standard.
The EMS includes a suite of environmental objectives that will facilitate continual assessment of the impacts of the port’s activities on the environment. It will help the PLA to meet commitments to legal compliance, minimisation of pollution and continual improvement.
The PLA has become an Affiliate of the Ecoports foundation, a research project set up by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) with European Union funding, to develop a Port Environmental Review System (PERS). PERS is one of the self-assessment tools that have been established to assist ports to achieve environmental awareness and good practice. The PLA has used PERS as a useful stepping stone to achieving ISO 14001.
