Understanding the Thames Estuary: Development of a numerical flow model

Increasing responsibilities and the implementation of new regulations and directives as well as the day to day operation and planning requirements within the PLA have highlighted a need for an improved understanding of the tidal Thames.

To assist with the PLA’s decision-making, and to facilitate future port development, a decision was made to develop the PLA’s 2D hydrodynamic flow model of the Outer Thames Estuary.

Recognising that this improved understanding was a common requirement for both the PLA and the Environment Agency, the two organisations commissioned HR Wallingford to develop a base model to support, in an iterative way, all other studies – including  tidal water levels, navigation studies through to complex estuarine sediment and morphological schematisations.

The Thames Estuary flow model, extending from Southend to Teddington, is the first step in this process of developing a model suite which will inform all major development in the tidal Thames.Illustration of the 2D base model
