From Teddington, past the Thames Barrier and out to sea, we work closely with commercial recreational and amenity groups to maximise the potential of the Thames as a safe and enjoyable waterway for trade, tourism and leisure.
The role of Harbour Master (SMS and VTS) sits within the Chief Harbour Master’s department and we are looking for someone with experience of working as a harbour master and managing a VTS centre in a large port environment, and who has the gravitas to lead on navigational safety within the port, in accordance with the Port Marine Safety Code. You will ensure the efficient management of an effective navigational Safety Management System (SMS), Vessel Traffic System (VTS) and emergency and oil spill response provisions. Ideally you will have experience of working in a port or marine environment that is highly unionised.
To apply candidates must hold a degree and a MCA approved Harbour Masters Certificate or senior STCW qualification. In addition you will have significant management experience in the marine and ports industry, including in particular, navigational safety management, risk assessment, incident investigation, vessel traffic systems, pilotage operations, major infrastructure projects. Proven experience of developing and implementing policies, with the ability to work within the legal and regulatory framework of the harbour master role are key requirements. You must be able to lead, motivate and manage effectively and have proven and highly effective interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to act with tact and confidence. Excellent written skills and an ability to work effectively under pressure are essential.
