Filming Licences

Commercial filming on the tidal river Thames requires a licence from the PLAAll filming activity (and all commercial still photography) on the tidal Thames requires a filming licence. This includes ALL filming involving boats and vessels and filming on piers and other structures in the River. We can also advise on the possibilities for safe filming activity on the Thames foreshore (ie the part of the river exposed at low tide).

When hiring a vessel for filming on the tidal Thames you should ensure that:

  • the vessel is licensed for the number of people in your crew/the activity you plan to carry out
  • you have appropriate insurance
  • (unless you are in the passenger areas of a passenger boat) you wear a lifejacket at all times, particularly if working on an open deck where there are no guardrails
