Pilotage Charges Held in Port of London

Pilotage charges for vessels using the Port of London are to be held at their current rate for 2002, following a decision by the Board of the Port of London Authority (PLA). The move reflects the competitive nature of the UK’s ports industry.

Although there will be no increase in standard pilotage charges, the PLA has adjusted its Boarding and Landing charges to bring them into line with those levied by other south-east ports. In addition, vessel and cargo conservancy charges will increase in line with inflation at 2%.

Following last year’s decision to phase-in over a two year period the introduction of the increased charge for Tripping – paid by those vessels operating within the Port of London under Pilotage Exemption Certificates – the second part of this will apply, raising the charge from £15.75 to £20.00 per trip. All changes in charges take effect immediately.

"The decision to hold Pilotage charges at their present level recognises the need to keep charges to shipping companies to a minimum in today’s fiercely competitive marketplace. We are aware that any increase is unwelcome and the decision to raise conservancy by the PLA Board was taken only after careful consideration," said PLA Chief Executive, Steve Cuthbert.

"Whilst we have been continuing to implement cost saving measures at all levels throughout the PLA, the Board deemed its necessary to increase conservancy charges to maintain the 24-hour year-round services we are required to provide to all users of the Port," he concluded.
