An artist's impression of the new London Gateway PortDPWorld has today (5 January, 2010) marked the start of work on the development of a new container terminal – London Gateway Port – on the former site of an oil refinery on the Thames at Shellhaven in Essex.

Port of London Authority (PLA) chief executive, Richard Everitt, welcomed the news.  He said:

"This is a great way to start the year as we have been working hard for over a decade to see this major project come to fruition.  The development of the London Gateway scheme underlines the continued importance to the UK's economy of the Port of London, which is already the UK’s second largest port."
