 Thames rowers have won prize money totalling £2,000 after being judged among the safest on the river.
The cash comes from an annual competition, funded by the Port of London Authority (PLA), that was first staged last year – 12 months after a Rowing Code of Practice was introduced on the tidal Thames.
It goes to clubs which either have a good safety record or have made the best improvements.
Vesta Rowing Club took the 'Overall Winner' title and £1,000; Barnes Bridge Ladies Rowing Club was named 'Runner Up' with a prize of £500; and Mortlake Anglian and Alpha Boat Club was given £500 for being the 'Most Improved'.
The Rowing Code was developed by the PLA and the Thames Regional Rowing Council (TRRC) following a rise in the number of incidents involving rowers on the tidal Thames above Putney.
Now, two years on, PLA chief harbour master, David Snelson said:
"Year on year rowing incidents have dropped, reflecting the rowing community's ability to self-regulate within the framework of the Rowing Code.
"These three clubs have made considerable efforts to keep the tideway a safe and enjoyable place for all rowers."
The results were so close this year that a further five clubs - Emanuel School Boat Club, Tideway Scullers School, Crabtree Boat Club, HSBC Rowing Club, and London Rowing Club - are being awarded certificates recognising their contribution to river safety.
