Search and Rescue (SAR)

Search and Rescue (SAR) co-ordination is "the activity of locating and recovering persons in distress, potential distress or missing, and delivering them to a place of safety" and, in UK tidal waters, is the responsibility of HM Coastguard.

Outer Limit to Canvey Island

SAR operations to the east of Canvey Island will be co-ordinated by Thames Coastguard at Walton-on-the-Naze in conjunction with Port Control London. Subsequent recovery or safety of navigation phases will be co-ordinated through Port Control London.

Canvey Island to Teddington

SAR operations between Canvey Island and Teddington will be co-ordinated by London Coastguard, located at the Thames Barrier Navigation Centre. London Coastguard will also co-ordinate the SAR component of any LESLP Major Incident. Subsequent recovery or safety of navigation phases will be co-ordinated by the appropriate PLA VTS Centre.

Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)

Three permanently manned lifeboat stations are located at Gravesend, Tower Pier and Chiswick Pier. Further voluntary manned stations are located at Teddington, Southend-on-Sea and Sheerness.
