Statutory Responsibilities - Geographical area of PLA's jurisdiction

The PLA has jurisdiction over the entire tidal Thames from Teddington in the west to its outer limits in the Thames Estuary to the east, a length of some 95 miles.

The PLA's pilotage responsibilities within the London Pilotage District are further extended seawards to include the main approach channels to the Thames.

Upstream of Southend-on-Sea, the PLA owns much of the river bed and foreshore up to the mean high water mark.
