Statutory Responsibilities - Diversity of PLA's sphere of interestAn independent survey confirmed that the Port of London is a major generator of wealth in the local economy. Its activities are worth £2.7 billion to Thameside communities each year. The port directly provides 37,000 full time jobs, which in turn are paid a net total of £536m in wages. A further £179 million is spent locally on goods and services. The PLA's Planning and Partnerships department is in regular dialogue with central government, particularly in relation to the proposed development of the Thames Gateway, the riparian local authorities, the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority, the three regional development agencies and two regional planning bodies for the East and South East.
