1 Environment Agency

Upstream of the PLA limit at Teddington, i.e. the non-tidal Thames, the Environment Agency (EA) is the designated navigational authority for the River. The EA is also responsible for response and clean up operations in respect of any chemical pollution in the tidal Thames to the west of the former PLA seaward limit, (Havengore Creek to Warden Point). Additionally, the EA is responsible for licensing the operation of all outfalls and water abstraction and water quality in general throughout the length of the river. It has some fishery responsibilities and is the Flood Protection Authority for the Thames area. It operates and maintains the Thames Flood Protection Barriers at Woolwich, Barking and Tilbury plus those protecting Canvey Island.

2 London Port Health Authority

The Corporation of London in its capacity as the London Port Health Authority has a number of responsibilities relating to public and animal health legislation within the Port. The main areas of work undertaken by Port Health are :

• Imported Food Control - to safeguard public health by monitoring imported food cargoes.
• Infectious Disease Control - to control the spread of infectious diseases amongst crews and passengers on aircraft and ships.
• Shellfish Control - a responsibility to ensure that cockles, mussels and other bivalve molluscs harvested from the Thames estuary are fit for human consumption in all respects.
• Food Hygiene - to advise food businesses on food safety and hygiene.
• Vector Control - to identify evidence of and control rodent and insect infestations on aircraft, ships and port premises
