Estates Management

River Works licences

Annual fees or, in certain circumstances, one-off payment of fees for licenced River Works.   Our Estates Management team liaises with owners of licenced developments which include pontoons, piers, pipes and tunnels placed in, over or under the Thames.  This includes regular reviews of the value of the licence fees.

Operational estate

The Estates Team manages and maintains an operational estate of over 2,500 acres, in order to meet PLA’s core responsibilities of facilitating navigational safety, environmental management and promoting the use of the Thames.  The Estates team secures and disposes of properties to meet the evolving needs of the operation.  Recently sites have been acquired for radars and Automatic Identification System (AIS) equipment.

The estate comprises a diverse range of uses from traditional industrial/storage and office/light industrial premises to agricultural tenancies and sites of special scientific interest.  The major elements of the estate are:

There are limited letting opportunities at these sites and telecommunications companies may be especially interested in mast sites available at Shooters Hill, Barking, Woolwich, Crayford, Denton, Harwich, Allhallows and Cliffe.

The various dock complexes along the Thames (St Katherine Dock, Surrey Dock, Royal Docks, Tilbury Docks, etc.,) are no longer owned by the PLA having been sold off during the 1980s and 1990s.
