The Wingfield ScullsThe Wingfield Sculls is held annually on the 4¼ mile (6.8 km) Championship Course from Putney to Mortlake. It dates back to 1830 and was founded by Henry Colsell Wingfield, a barrister, as the result of a wager. The race is for single scullers and decides the amateur sculling championship of the Thames and Great Britain. The 2009 event took place on 5th November and was won by Matthew Wells, a member of the Great Britain Olympic double scull. Matthew is a former Britain junior and under-23 gold medal-winner and this was his first Wingfield contest. His victory put London University's name on the trophy for the first time in the competition's 174 year history. Details of the 2010 event will appear here nearer the date. |
