The Wingfield Sculls

The Wingfield Sculls is held annually on the  4¼ mile (6.8 km) Championship Course from Putney to Mortlake. The race is for single scullers and decides the amateur sculling championship of the Thames and Great Britain. The race dates back to 1830 and was founded by Henry Colsell Wingfield, a barrister, as the result of a wager.

The 2007 event on 25th October saw the revival of the women's championship, which had been an annual event from 1929 until the early 1970's when the Women's Amateur Rowing Association amalgamated with the ARA. Elise Laverick of Thames Rowing Club won the first-ever Wingfield Sculls trophy for women which was donated by the Wingfield Family Society and based on the original 1830 trophy for men.

The original trophy for the men's race was won by World Champion Mahe Drysdale from New Zealand.
