PLA Colour Charts

The PLA has been re-compiling its series of A0 1:2500 scale charts into A2 size 1:5000 colour charts more suitable for navigational use. These will be issued as three folios of 11 charts each, covering Tedington to Wandsworth (Folio 1), Wandsworth to Woolwich (Folio 2) and Woolwich to Gravesend (Folio 3). The first folio (Folio 2) will be published in April 2009, with the upriver one following in the summer and the lower one in the autumn.

In order to support effective passage planning, the PLA recommends that, where the size and construction of the vessel allows, all commercial, inland waterways vessels carry the largest, appropriate scale of chart for their area of operation.

In addition, and in order to meet the requirements of the national Fitness for Purpose Standard and the forthcoming Inland Waterways Freight Vessel (Technical) Standards for Newbuild Vessels, it will now be a requirement for all such vessels licensed by the PLA to carry suitable charts.

Chart updates will be made available on this website, major corrections and new surveys will result in a re-print of the relevant chart. Operators are encouraged to apply for an annual maintenance contract, costing £9 per folio, whereby they will get email notification of corrections and any reprints during the period.

The PLA also publishes charts from Teddington to the Thames Estuary. Click on the map below to find the chart area and number you are interested in. Charts cost £16 each and are available from the PLA's Hydrographic Service (see below).

Examples of charts are available for viewing on PLA Harbour Service craft and major operators' offices.

Folio 2 is now available from the PLA Hydrographic Service at a cost of £45.00 plus £6.00 postage and packing (UK addresses only). Postage and packing costs for overseas addresses are available on request.
