Riverside Code
Follow the Riverside Code
- If you see anyone in difficulty in the river, dial 999 and ask for the emergency services.
- No swimming
- the tide is too strong and boats may not see you until it's too late.
- Don’t throw rubbish in the river
- it puts people and wildlife at risk.
- Always walk down steps or ramps to the river
- they could be wet, muddy and slippery.
- Always make sure you can get off the foreshore quickly
- watch the tide and make sure the steps, stairs or ramp you use are close and clear. Remember, the tide rises more quickly than it falls.
- Always wear shoes or boots on the foreshore
- broken glass and other sharp objects could be hidden there.
- Beware of muddy areas - they are soft and deep.
- Alcohol, drugs and the river don't mix
- cold water, strong currents and drinking could kill.
- Tell the Police if notices, lifebelts and barriers have been vandalised - it puts lives at risk.
- Cover any cuts, scratches or broken skin with a waterproof plaster. If you cut or scratch yourself, wash the affected area well and put antiseptic on it. If you feel ill within a week of being near the river, visit a doctor.
The river is much cleaner than it was but there is still a small risk of infection.
Remember - going onto the foreshore can be dangerous.
