Managing Safety
We look after safety of navigation over 95 miles of tidal river. Over those 95 miles the use of the river changes from rowing and other leisure activities in the west around Putney to commercial deepsea trade around Tilbury. It’s a great place for sport, commerce and travel, but throughout its length there are hazards for river users - fast flowing currents, bridges, numerous vessels carrying people or goods and a tidal range of seven metres. Our navigational Safety Management System (SMS) is the main tool we use to manage navigation and to identify the risks on the river, the steps needed to eliminate or keep them to a minimum and ensure that the risks are regularly reviewed. And with a river as diverse as the tidal Thames it's essential in helping us keep people on the river safe.
As a Statutory Harbour Authority, The PLA has a primary responsibility to facilitate the safety of navigation and associated marine operations on the tidal Thames.
