Notice to Mariners

No.16 of 2005  Saundersness Shoal. Blackwall Reach - Reduced Depths

River users are advised that Saundersness shoal extends into the navigation channel and, off Plymouth Wharf, includes a least depth of 1.9m below chart datum extending 25 metres into the navigation channel and depths less than 3.0 metres below Chart Datum extending 70 metres into the channel. (see chartlet).  For environmental reasons it is not currently possible to carry out maintenance dredging of the shoal.

Consequently, large vessels inbound for Greenwich or the Upper Pool can be expected to navigate in the centre or to the port side of the channel in Blackwall Reach.

Large inbound vessels are to report their position to London VTS when approaching Blackwall Point. London VTS will re-broadcast their position and advise outward bound traffic of the restricted channel for the large vessel.

All craft in Blackwall Reach are to navigate with extreme caution, be aware of the reduced depths and avoid impeding vessels constrained to the restricted channel.

Further information will be broadcast by London VTS on VHF Channel 14.
