Notice to Mariners

No.7 of 2008  Saundersness Shoal. Blackwall Reach - Reduced Depths.

Recent surveys show that the Saundersness shoal extends 70 metres into the Authorised Channel off Plymouth Wharf (see chartlet).

  • A least depth of 1.5m below chart datum extends 10 metres into the channel.
  • A least depth of 2.0m below chart datum extends 20 metres into the channel.
  • A least depth of 3.0 metres below chart datum extends 30 metres into the channel.
  • A least depth of 4.0m below chart datum extends 60 metres into the channel.
  • 4.7 metre depths occur up to 70 metres into the channel.

For environmental reasons it is not currently possible to carry out maintenance dredging of the shoal.

Consequently, large vessels inbound for Greenwich or the Upper Pool can be expected to navigate in the centre or to the south side of the channel in Blackwall Reach.

Large inbound vessels are to report their position to London VTS when approaching Blackwall Point.  London VTS will re-broadcast their position and advise outward bound traffic of the restricted channel for the large vessel.

All craft in Blackwall Reach are to navigate with extreme caution, be aware of the reduced depths and avoid impeding vessels constrained to the restricted channel.

Further information will be broadcast by London VTS on VHF Channel 14.
