Background
The implementation in the UK in July 2004 of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code prompted the need for some form of standardised ID card system for waterborne service providers working in the Port of London. Accordingly, early in 2005, the Port of London Authority introduced the Port Service Provider ID Card.
In the last year over 200 Port Service provider ID Cards have been issued, on a voluntary basis, to a wide range of employed and self-employed port workers. This form of personal identification is endorsed by the London Port Security Committee and is recognised by each of the 49 ISPS Port Facilities (and other berths) within the port.
A Single, Recognised Port-wide Form of ID
Following the early success of the scheme, and in order to establish this form of Identification as the "port standard" and thus improve overall security within the port, the London Port Security Committee urges all organisations and self-employed individuals providing waterborne services in the port to ensure all relevant persons obtain a Port Service Provider ID card.
