Air Quality and Green Tariff

Update | June 2020
The PLA’s Air Quality Strategy for the tidal Thames was the first for the UK port industry when released in 2018. In the last two years we have made strong progress across many of the 18 actions outlined in the strategy.

Now, to reflect that progress and the rapid evolution in regulation and other influences, we are updating the strategy. This June 2020 update reports the advances we have made and the new actions we plan to take.

The first report on the results of air quality monitoring to assess the local effect of emissions from cruise ships docking in Greenwich since May 2019 has now been released. The network of air pollution monitors remains operational and live data can be viewed here; cruise ship operations have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The air quality monitoring programme is part of the Air Quality Strategy for the tidal Thames Action Plan.

Emission Reduction Roadmap

Inland Shipping on the Tidal Thames | June 2020
The first emission reduction roadmap is now available. Produced as part of the Air Quality Strategy for the tidal Thames Action Plan, the roadmap will benefit operators, the PLA and all other stakeholders, offering direction in reaching current and potential future emission targets.
Vessels visiting the Port of London that can show that they go beyond basic environmental requirements are now eligible for a discount on port charges. The discount is automatically applied to vessels registered under the Environmental Ships Index scheme with a score of 30, or above.
