Real Time Air Quality Monitoring
As part of the Air Quality Strategy for the tidal Thames, real time monitoring had been planned to monitor the air emissions hotspots across the river that were identified from the Emission Inventory for the tidal Thames.
The real time monitoring can help the PLA to assess the level of pollution along the riverside in relation to the ambient air quality standards by enabling the calculation of air quality indexes. The result is useful for the PLA and our stakeholders to prioritise investments and resources to address the air quality issues in areas with the most concerns.
Due to local concerns on the impact on air quality of visiting cruise vessels at Greenwich Ship Tier, the PLA accelerated the timetable and installed an air quality monitoring network around the mooring to assess the impacts of cruise vessels berthing on local air quality in 2019. The lack of cruise activities in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, the PLA has decided to keep the network in place around Greenwich to continue monitoring until June 2022, at which point the extent of monitoring and the results will be further analysed and reviewed.
