Supporting Thames21

PLA passive driftwood collectors catch floating rubbish on the Thames

Thames21 is an environmental charity that mobilises thousands of volunteers every year to clean up the foreshore of the Thames. Its work includes clearing up waterside grot-spots, removing graffiti and creating new habitats for wildlife. It runs up to 150 events every year throughout London's 400 mile network of waterways.

The PLA has been working with the charity since its inception in 1994, providing baskets and cages which volunteers fill with litter from the foreshore. The cages are later taken away by the PLA which oversees appropriate recycling or disposal of the rubbish. In addition the PLA helps prepare Thames21's accounts, provides advice and support on HR matters.

The PLA’s floating 'Litter Traps' along the Thames collect floating debris, which can be a hazard for vessels, from the river.
