Code of Practice for Craft Towage Operations on the Thames Consultation

This consultation has concluded.

The Port of London Authority (PLA) has recently concluded a scheduled review of the Code of Practice for Craft Towage Operations on the Thames.

Proposed Amendments

As a result of that review and in the light of experience and the ongoing development of the Port’s Marine Safety Management System, the PLA is proposing the following changes to the Code:

  1. Updated Responsibilities section
  2. Updated Regulations section
  3. Removal of Section 4 – testing, inspection and maintenance
  4. Removal of Section 5 – preparations before commencing towage operations
  5. Removal of Section 6 – Crew safety during towage operations
  6. Removal of Section 7 – making up a tow and making fast to tugs
  7. Removal of Section 8 – underway and manoeuvring of the tow
  8. Removal of Section 9 – mooring barges on the Thames
  9. Updated section on non-routine tows
  10. Updated section on tugs and tows to and from sea
  11. Updated section on passage planning

Informal Public Consultation

A Draft amended Craft Towage Code (HTML, PDF) is therefore offered for informal public consultation.

The proposed changes listed above are significant and therefore the consultation version should be reviewed in comparison to the existing Code (PDF).

Any comments you may have in response to this consultation exercise should be addressed, in writing, to [email protected] before the closing date of 10 December 2021.
